Everybody has learned the basics of catalysis in high school chemistry. It's quite straight-forward; you can speed up a chemical process by adding a catalyst. In practice it's a bit more complex, as there are a lot of factors that need to be just right in order for the catalytic process to work in the most efficient way and to get the end-product you're aiming for.
The MCEC research consortium has commissioned Studio Synopsis to make a short animation explaining the workings of heterogeneous catalysis.

The Aim of the Project

The aim of this project was to develop the best and most clear explanation of how heterogeneous catalysis works in practice. Research consortium MCEC wanted to create this video so they can easily get everybody to have a basic understanding of catalytic systems in presentations about their research. As a bonus this video could be perfect for high-school chemistry lessons. 

A Multi-Scale System

Heterogeneous catalysis is an inherently multi-scale process. Everything - from the circumstances in the reactor tank to the atom placement in the catalytic material - has to be just right in order for the desired catalytic reaction to occur in the most efficient way.

The animation gives an overview of all scale levels and the way they each influence the catalytic process.
